Again, I am so sorry
my updates are rare and far and few between sometimes. Real life
happens, I have had too much personal struggle happening lately to even
mention. I still continue to create every single day, and pretty heavily
regardless. Such is life. Today, i've got a killer, killer release from
the 1300 series of K P M. You are going to love it.

Dave
Vorhaus was an american born bassist and composer who struck gold in
the UK musically, performing in orchestras before settling abroad and composing in White Noise with BBC Radiophonic Workshop partners Delia Derbyshire and
Brian Hodgson, formerly of Unit Delta Plus, a collective set up in 1966 by both of them and Peter Zinovieff to create music and also promote it's use in television, film and advertising.

While he may not be known as well in America, his unique use of the EMS Synthi VCS3 on 'An Electric Storm', released in 1968 on Island Records was quite pioneering and daring, and was pretty much the writing on the wall of what was to come in electronic music. Personally, i put him up there with the likes of Mort Garson, Andy Clark, and Keith Mansfield simply for his originality. A lot of the time, producers in library and production music may play a little too close to the chest in terms of strict melody and even stricter song structure.

Vorhaus was quite flexible in both his experiments as well as his ability to blend rhythmic and melodic components of songwriting and give you the best of both worlds, weird and soulful. Dave must have kept himself busy in a fashion similar to the likes of Muslimgauze, another essential musician who worked nonstop and diligently to perfect his craft. Perhaps you have seen this video with Dave Vorhaus, but if not, here's a look inside his studio, and some basics on his philosophy behind composition as well.

As you can see, not only was Vorhaus a great composer and musician, he was also a designer of synthesizers and innovated how synthesizers were made. He created a variable-step synthesizer called 'The Maniac' that was capable of up to 64 steps, not only that, separate sequences as well. He credits the possibility of this synthesizer due to the new availability of CMOS chips. Apparently, he still uses it to this day, how cool is that? If you'd like some more technical information about some of the stuff he made, hop on over to SOS for this article with excerpts and pics from the man himself:

Today, I have 'Sound Conjurer', an interstellar look at so many different tastes and styles that its hard to even give an explanation or describe this music. To call it 'ethereal' doesnt do it justice...theres a real hardline balance here between experimentalism and strong melodies that I feel a lot of people will enjoy and i consider it a personal fav, check this track. Unfortunately I cant find a video for 'Scurry Pt. 2', but I believe that track from this album may make use of 'The Maniac', most likely others too!

Again, my apologies for the lack of updates. I have been working hard at my own music, trying to get through some rough times. here's the album, enjoy. I'll try and post again within a few weeks.

http://www.mediafire.com/download/v2n7sd9eu5zvj95/dave_vorhaus_%26_dave_bradnum_-_sound_conjurer_%28kpm_1303%29.rar

those of you who know me, know that i love video games and the music within them. so i was especially pleased to hear this album, today i have 'video games and data movements', coloursound 74. this album was very tough to find and of course i was very happy to see joel's take on vgm and sfx, so here it is for you to enjoy.

anyway, on to the blog update. ive included another killer release by trevor bastow, this time trevor bastow and patrick wilson on the bruton label. some orchestral tracks fill out this release, but its mainly driving dancier electronic output, definitely for fans of spacier disco, maybe this is a bit smarter all around. simply beautiful music. for fans of ciani, hawkshaw, and mansfield.

as some of you who follow my blog know, i love the anthony hobson moniker, and ive got a soft spot for dewolfe all around. this album has a very balanced feel thats both rockin and groovin, but also retains a lot of orchestral elements. it claims to be 'for sport and action' on the back cover, and i'd say thats certainly accurate, but theres some great synthwork on this album with nice brass that will tinker with the back of your neck for sure. theres even some great guitar that ties all of the elements to this release together and makes a very cohesive release. its a cut above in both the arrangement and production and certainly worth hearing. have a listen to the first cut.

track 4 is missing from this rip, my apologies for that. but i think you'll see that this one is definitely worth sharing, and i hope you dig it! heres 'meet the future' by anthony hobson, enjoy!

super lush melodies here from jp decerf, ive got a dozen or so albums by him and this definitely is one of the albums i prefer more. just have a listen and see if tracks like rythmic and thematic dont do something for you. very nice layering of synth sounds on this, but the rhythms definitely arent to be scoffed at. i think this album even now is very ahead of its time. maybe you'll agree. enjoy.
Today I wanted to share this amazing album by James Asher, entitled Flash Music. James was a producer/multiinstrumentalist who wrote for New Southern Library, Rogue, and Bruton among other labels. He was a big deal in the production music world, he had licensed soundtracks to MTV and Studio Four among other places. While 'Flash Music' may be his most experimental and bizarre album, its also the most accessible, so I figured it would be a good idea to let you try this one on for size. Here, have a listen to 'Process Y', a great B-side album favorite.

To not mention that this album is very FM oriented and saturated sounding would be remiss, but theres also some other great synths and the way they mesh together is great. To me, this is very fun and organic electro music, but it's faurky still beat oriented. The kind of thing that will work for both porno or party music. Pets like it too. James has a great sense of melody on this album and the songs arent too long, so they feel very stacked with groove most of all. Recommended for you if you are into Teddy Lasry, Proxyon, Arsenal, Andy Clark,
and Keith Mansfield. So without further ado, heres Flash Music.
I wanted to lay this album on you because theres some serious things going on here melodywise, beautiful synthesizers and choices of instruments here. But between what you hear in the playing and the beautiful songs on this album, well, it is certainly hard to say what the main goodies even are..but i'll say its gonna stick with you.

Tracks like "Caressed by the Sun" and 'On The Move' have such a great feel, you absolutely get treated to sensibilities that you'd hear in a real verbose NWOBHM metal track, but theres a ton of pop to this. Think simply that _feel_. I guess it's best to say you get those polyharmonic good-feelin chords across many instruments, which is a big plus, but these guys are a lot like Landscape, aka The German YMO, who I will get into another time.

Some songs are certainly spaced-out and driving, some have really nice acoustic guitar driving the songs, but you'd be hard pressed to not be able to compare it to all of the following things: Final Fantasy, The Fucking Champs, Frederik Mercier, Com Truise, Polka Music, Folk Music, Space Music, Krautrock, and IDM Music. Just check it out.

Anyways, this album was recorded by several German doods in 1979 and 1980. Eddy Mueller, Steve Jehring, Wolfgang Jarger, Klaus Meyer, and Dicky Hank on Track 4. They recorded 5 or 6 albums in the 1980s, this happens to by my favorite. Please to enjoy 'On The Move'.
Today, I have a great library/production album by Trevor Duncan. He was a british arranger, conductor, and composer who released only a handful of albums, but they're all classic and worth checking out. He really had a way with incorporating melody and making rhythm unimportant with his unique soundscapes.

Sharing his 1981 Impress Records release 'Other Worlds' with you today, I think this album serves as a great starting point of what this genre has to offer if you are new to library music, or just looking for something new. Enjoy!
We love all of these bands for different reasons, be it the music or the feel or the people involved. A lot of bands can come and go, but theres a few bands that stick with you over whether they break up or whether they go on hiatus and come back with even stronger material. One of those seminal VGM bands to us is certainly Michigan's Year 200x. Fairly early on in our own travels, we met Tim Lydon, mainman and super sweetheart of the band. After many years and the bands incredible album 'We Are Error', Year 200x has released 'World Of Ruin', a 6 song offering that showcases a lot of that flair that drew us to Year 200x so long ago. An interesting conversation about VGM and all things considered follows.

short release. There are some killer tones and the playing and
arrangement is top notch, as expected. It definitely makes the wait
since we are error worth it. Do you feel that maybe less is more in
terms of offerings for bands these days with interest shifting to sites
such as Bandcamp, iTunes, and Spotify?

Y200X: I’ve definitely noticed a shift towards shorter releases, and even releasing single songs at a time. Sometimes bands will just one-off songs and then when they have an album’s worth, they’ll bundle the songs together into an album. That’s definitely not something that was possible when I started making music, and I think it’s pretty neat. It provides an opportunity to release music without needing the budget of recording and releasing a whole album at a time. The budget required could discourage people from releasing great music, so it’s nice to have a way around it.

I really believe that if we had stuck our guns to try to release a full LP then we would have ended up releasing nothing at all. All of the tunes on the EP are ones that we had at least played a few times live, so the arrangement was there; it was just a matter of adding the extra layers (extra instrumentation, vocals, fadeouts, etc) that can be done in a studio but not necessarily in a live setting. I also think that focusing on a smaller set of songs really helped us to spend more time on each song, allowing us to realize our vision for the songs more fully than we might have otherwise.

Can you tell the readers a little bit about what keeps your inspiration and desire to progress with both production and playing going as the years go by?

Y200X: Man, it’s hard. Like...really hard. As tends to happen, our lives have changed a lot since we started playing together in 2006; kids have been born, marriages have occurred, members have moved out-of-state, things like that. Just look at how long it took for us to produce the new EP...we recorded the drums back in 2011. Almost three years to record six tracks.

Despite all of this, we still have this music inside of us, along with a love of the original music and appreciation for those people who enjoy our particular flavor of video game covers. From these things we draw our inspiration. We feel we owe it to our listeners and ourselves to progress in terms of playing skill, arrangements, and production, to show that we still care and that regardless of all of the things going on in our personal lives, we’re going to give as much of ourselves as we can in order to make music that makes people feel good.

TSS: If you had to pick one Year 200x song as your favorite both in playing live and recording that you guys have done over the years, which one would it be, and why?

Y200x: I’d have to say Dancing Mad from Final Fantasy VI. It’s a tune that we never thought we’d be able to flesh out, for many reasons including its length, its complexity, and how different each movement sounds. However with lots of work and brainstorming, I think we were able to come up with a pretty good version. Good enough that when we play it live, it doesn’t feel like an 11-minute song, it just kind of flies by.

This blog update is courtesy of mr Luke Vibert, the man behind IDM aliases such as Wagon Christ, Plug, Amen Andrews as well as other great recordings. He was first known for his work with Jeremy Simmonds as well as Richard D James in the earliest days of Rephlex Records, a seminal IDM label from the UK. You might be familiar with some of his stuff and not even know it, his music's got a very solid consistency to it that is definitely essential listening.

Enough about Juicy Luke though, this blog is an homage to great Library and Production bonzers and you can and will seek his stuff out as well, I command it. Luke happens to be a big fan of synthy/groovy production music, and over the years has released two volumes of 'Nuggets' prior to this, both were pretty important for me personally to get into the stuff in this genre that I dig the most.

This release has some really sledgehammering grooved jams on it, the work by Alan Hawkshaw, Trevor Bastow, Brian Bennet, and Francis Monkman are definitely some tracks from their respective releases that are some of the biggest gems to me, from the song construction as well as the production and presentation. Im fairly familiar with a lot of these songs and their lineage at this point, having spent a lot of time researching over the last few years, and after listening was pretty surprised to see how many of Luke's picks made it onto mix CD's i have made recently, it's quite uncanny.

I present to you Juicy Luke Vibert's third installment of the 'Nuggets' series, I can say with great conviction that there is not a bad song on this release. This is my favorite compilation of the three, and maybe the one with the most experimentation and synth. So if you're into the more driving and whacked out kind of stuff the genre has to offer, have a listen to his choices. Seek out the albums these songs originate from, Discogs can help you a lot with this. Most importantly, help keep this music alive! And dont sleep on Mr. Viberts music too, he, also like Production Music is a cut above. Thanks so much, Juicy Luke.
This release is pretty breathtaking to be quite honest with you. Anders Helmerson's 'End Of Illusion' is a fave of mine, and maybe one thats far ahead of the time that it was made, 1979.

Anders was a swedish keyboard player who unfortunately didnt have too much output, from what I can find he released only two albums. This is his first, it has a ton of snarl and growl to it, but a TON of really beautiful sections and a ridiculous amount of melody and texture to it. A continuous play through all the songs keeps a great flow with a ton of proggier elements and is a very driving listen. You MUST check this album out. For fans of nastier synths, tricked out drums, and gnarly melody. Have a listen!

Frederic Mercier is another great artists in the Library/Production realm, underdog of labels such as Patchwork, Polydor, Koka, Carrere and many more. Admittedly i know very little about this guy, it appears to me that info on him is a bit elusive. But if you enjoyed the Klaus Weiss entry I put up a little while back, and the Frederik Schikowski, you're bound to enjoy this. There is some other instrumentation in here, so its not just choom-and-zoom space disco. But there are very beautiful synths, and a great style of blending fm and beyond with driving rhythms here that will have you involuntarily bobbing your head. Have a listen and enjoy.

for me, describing his music is as simple as calling it 'essential music', something that fits in my musical collection in the highest regard. you can listen to the music of subpixel again and again and hear a new melody, new drum sound, hell, new sound in general again and again, even after repeated immediate listenings. i urge you to check out his bandcamp and enjoy what he's made for all of us so far. here's my two favorite releases to start you out:

'the wave', this album truly leaves me speechless because of the fact that matt & co cared enough to release a chiptune version as well as a version with full instrumentation, a feat that with the complexity of the music is something i admire highly. hear this incredible piece of music here:

http://subpixel.bandcamp.com/album/the-wave

'birthdays', a beautiful tribute to friends, and as he mentions in the liner notes, sometimes belated, but with the beauty of this album, not a lick of effort is spared in these songs. this album also features a kill rendition of 'i only have eyes for you', which you should check out if you're into the older hits. check it out here:

http://subpixel.bandcamp.com/album/birthdays

truly sweet genre-breaking music by a great guy. i hope you'll check out some of his work, for you library and production music heads out there, maybe you'll dig it as much as some of those old killer brutons and kpm slabs and see some of the similarities that i do in his music.

very little information can be gleaned about the guy on the internet, which is a shame. but in your ears, theres a very signature sound that this guy gives through his projects 'astral sounds', 'patchwork' with other greats such as keith papworth and chris rae on the dewolfe label, and his work on the 'video tech' compilations on pml. i highly recommend you search out some of his music for yourself. dont even bother looking anything up, let your ears do the work. you will know this guys sound when you hear it, as goofy as that sounds. so without further ado, and by request, please enjoy one of his finest works, astral sounds' 'sound waves part 1'.
